Your immune system is complex and it’s important to know what that “immune booster” you are buying is actually doing to your body. Some OTC products are high in antioxidants that can actually harm the free radical needs of the innate immune function.
Non steroidal anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen can in fact damage the immune system allowing persistent inflammation instead of a robust clean up after an infection, they should be used sparingly and for a few days maximum. And remember that inflammation attracts neutrophils/immune cells to an infection area, which is needed for the infection control of the hollow organs (lungs, bladder, intestines, sinuses), which is another reason why complete fever suppression may not be the best plan.
A lancet article also described how steroid medications may prolong viral infections and may not be indicated in acute respiratory viruses.
However, read on as I speak of cytokine storms that may cause of organ failure in infections such as viruses…..

1. Our Lyme patients are strongly recommended to stay on their protocols for Lyme when in acute illness as Lyme interferes with immune function and you are best to reduce Lyme volume and therefore immune invasion as much as possible. Neutraceuticals that have anti acute infection properties and and anti Lyme properties exist to match your illness situation.
2. Biofilms support.
It is important to support biofilm breakdown as many infections use this shielding strategy to evade the immune system and treatments, which is a huge culprit in recurring infections.
Berberine containing herbs such as oregon graperoot (an environmentally sustainable source) or the enzyme serrapeptase (taken on an empty stomach), are proven to open up these films to allow treatments to work best against Lyme, Virus, bacterial and fungal related infections.

Did you know ?
Dr Bastos has been and still is a functional immunology student of renowned immunology educator and researcher Dr Yanouk for 11 months to date?
How to protect:
Risk #1 – Poor immune status:
With viruses in which treatments have not had time to be tested and established via research, it’s strongly advised that a focus on balancing out the immune is had. If you experience chronic inflammation, allergy, eczema, chronic bladder infection,OR autoimmune patterns such as rheumatoid arthritis you are likely TH2 dominant meaning a risk of innate immune impairment and chronic inflammation as a baseline even before acquiring any new virus infections. This is a risk.
The innate immune is your first line of infection attack that works immediately even even if no memory of the current illness has been created to date. It takes 3 days + even if you body has past memory to the infection you are exposed to (naturally or vaccine) to ramp up these Memory cell fighters when a known infection is detected by your body….meaning the innate immune is key to preventing an infection from settling past the outer Wei Qi (as described in Chinese medicine) and into the deeper layers.
A video assessment and questionnaire can help determine your risk of TH2 dominance and TH1 immune impairment.
Risk#2
High Baseline Non Productive Inflammation.
Some inflammation when there is an infection is productive,as it attracts your neutrophils to the right area/chemotactic to start fighting.
Some inflammation is autoinflammation meaning the trigger is gone and the fire is still burning often with NFKb and Stat 3 (when autoimmune is involved).
A higher inflammation rate pre infection exposure is a risk for a cytokine storm when in infection, meaning an excessive high inflammation in which organs can fail.
A higher baseline of inflammation can be determined with a simple, inexpensive HsCrP test and a HbA1C test. Simply call our office and we can direct fax the forms to your local lifelabs and provide a video call regarding outcomes.
Products Highlights – reach out to our office or your neutraceutical expert regarding contraindications and if this is a good option for you:Glycyrrhiza glabra – a known expectorant ie. helps mucus clearing from the respiratory tract, and anti tussive/anti cough. Protects the Liver from toxicity. Anti Inflammatory action by potentiating natural corticosteriods in our body. In vivo, inhibated mycobacterium, and bacterial and mold forms. Contraindicated in hypertension, cholestasis, low potassium/hypokalemia and chronic Kidney/renal insufficiency.
Panax Ginseng – was proven to prevent flu and prevent your stress chemistry from allowing destruction of your T immune cells. This is taken and effective before viral invasion and not seen as effective to actually reduce viral load.
Lomatium – a herb found effect against influenza A and B and Epstein Barr Virus and rotavirus. In rare cases may cause a rash.
Berberine– TH1 booster, decreases inflammasone activity (chronic inflammation), biofilm buster (to avoid infection that hides from treatment.
Vitamin A – anti viral, Stat 3 inhibator
Vitamin D – blood levels under 250 to avoid toxicity. Anti inflammatory in a few ways including promoting enzyme types that break down the DNA of mast cells/allergy reaction cells that burst open protecting the body from more inflammation reaction
Vitamin C – stabilizes mast cell degranulation meaning less inflammation increase in inflamed organs such as lungs, anti viral
Baicalen/found in Skullcap – TH1 promoter, IL 6 inhibator which is the target action of a medication used in a “Cytokine storm” ie. an inflammation flare in a viral infection that leads to organ failure and death.
Reishi mushroom and Astragulus – innate immune boosters. Reishi powder is being produced for our patients now to accommodate small children’s needs. Tea of each can also be had cold or warm 3+ cups daily.
Andrographis – found to reduce a ‘cytokine storm’ that can lead to organ failure in infection. Found to kill RNAs viruses. A furin inhibator (binding ability of viruses).
Artemisa – found to kill retroviruses. Anti Lyme aspects, found useful in SARs, anti malarial nobel prize, treats babesia
